HOW TO SAFELY REMOVE YOUR LAWN SPRINKLER PUMP

No matter how well your sprinkler system works throughout the year, at some point you might find that your pump is in need of repair. That is why an experienced provider of sprinkler repair in Southwest Ranches, FL is here to walk you through the steps of safely removing your sprinkler pump so it can be inspected for repairs:

  • Turn off the power supply: Different pumps will have varying configurations, but regardless of what type of pump you have, it is necessary to turn off the power before having any repair work done. The most common sprinkler systems operate on a relay switch that sends power to the pump each time the irrigation controller opens a valve. If this is the setup that you have in your yard, you can disconnect the power by unplugging this controller. If your pump is plugged directly into an electrical outlet, you can simply unplug from there. If you are unable to determine how to disconnect the power directly, you can shut off the circuit breaker that controls the pump and turn off the power there.
  • Disconnect submersible pumps: Once the power has been turned off, you can next remove the submersible pump from the water. Note that if your pump is not submersible, it will be located either in your basement or garage, or somewhere in the close vicinity of the water source.
  • Separating the wires: You will then need to separate the wires on the pump. To do this, remove the metal plate that houses the wiring by unscrewing the small screws that are holding it in place. Then remove the small screws at each terminal that connect the wires to the pump.
  • Remove the piping: To remove the inlet pipe from the pump, turn a pipe wrench counterclockwise to unscrew the fitting that holds the two together. On most models there will be an arrow that indicates the flow of water from the source to the pump to assist you. You can then do the same to remove the fitting from the other end of the pump that goes to the sprinklers.
  • Free up the pump: If there is anything bolting your pump to the ground, you can remove these screws or bolts as the final step. Once complete, your pump is ready to be removed.

Because each sprinkler and pump model will vary, it is always best to consult with the user manual for your specific sprinkler pump.
